In Defence Of: Bad Traffic

Most mornings of my life.

At least you can get a lot of thinking done.

Take the time to try and admire what’s around you. The other vehicles, the buildings, the road you are driving on, the sky, the interior design of your vehicle. Or the fact that at least you don’t have to take the train, or bus, or…. and may God truly help you, a tram in Melbourne.

One trick I always like to employ, which i picked up from a how-to book on traditional archery of all places, is to practice the thing you would rather be doing while in the car. This doesn’t mean take your hand off the steering wheel and pretend you are drawing a bow. It means that you imagine the process of doing it while you are trying it.

What oldmate the trad-archery instructor advised corroborates with what neuroscientists say. The brain develops that area of neural connections the more it is worked on. So if archery is your thing, trying to get better at hitting those bullseyes, then you are imagining drawing the bow correctly, holding the draw for the right amount of time, accounting for the wind and the distance, sighting, etc etc.

You can apply this trick to almost anything you want to get better at, and it works! Needless to say, I think alot about drawing and painting in the car. But also speeches i need to make, stuff i want'/need to write. Stuff I want to say to people etc, stuff I want/need to buy, budgeting and scheduling, planning a project, fixing something, sorting out a problem at work.

Best of all, try as they might, the government can’t stop you from thinking. Try as they might to steer your thoughts a certain way, and you’ve gotta watch out for when they try to do that. Ultimately you are in control if you have the awareness of it.
